What's new with Fume Hoods at Genie Scientific

It has been five Years since Genie Scientific Inc. and Lawarence Berkeley National Laboratory first formed a partnership to build three prototype low flow fume hoods. The revolutionary laboratory fume hoods were used in demonstration projects sponsored by the California Energy Commission's Public Interest Energy Research Program (PIER).

"I cannot believe that it has been 5 years since that project," explained COO Mel LeVan. "It was a fun project for myself and our engineers. It was great to work with one of the most notable and distinguished laboratories in the country, and be on the cutting edge of fume hood design."

The entire goal of the project was to build a low flow fume hood that could drastically cut energy cost by reducing the cubic feet per minute of air that was passing over the face of the hood and exiting the building. The prototypes did their job and paved the way for low flow hoods, which are now manufactured by all companies in the lab industry.

LeVan explained, "It is very satisfying to look back after five years and see the current day impact of the study. Now everyone is trying to be green by making low flow hoods, but Genie has been green for 30 years!"

The prototypes paved the way for other Genie designs like the Powerhouse and Slimline.
