History of Genie Scientific Fume Hoods

Over the past 30 years Genie Scientific has been fabricating laboratory fume hoods, learning many lessons along the way. This three decade long journey has allowed Genie to fine-tune their manufacturing process resulting in a superior fume hood product.

The first Genie model fume hood was built in 1980. It used a cable pulley system balanced with a lead counterweight to open the sash and was painted with a spray on system. The pulleys were somewhat unreliable and had a tendency to let the cable slip off the track, while the spray painting took time and was not effective. The next generation Genie lab fume hoods had several improvements over its predecessor. The cable system was vastly improved and was very reliable. The lead counterweight was replaced with a sheet metal counterweight allowing for even easier sash operation. The spray paint system was replaced with powder coating giving the hoods a beautiful finish while simultaneously providing better protection against chemicals.

Then in 2002 Genie unveiled the Slimline lab fume hood model. The Slimline is the result of 30 years in the laboratory furniture industry. Replacing the cable system is a chain and sprocket system that makes opening and closing the sash extremely easy. Adjustable baffles allow for optimal airflow and with a variety of linear and service fixtures options the Slimline is great for any job. And of course they are powder coated to color of choice.
