Importance of Adjustable baffles in Fume Hoods

Recently in the laboratory furniture industry emphasis has been placed on the importance of adjustable baffles inside laboratory fume hoods. That is why all Genie Scientific fume hoods are equipped with an adjustable baffle.

You always want to make sure that the baffle is set for the intended use of the fume hood. You want to factor in the size of the objects in the fume hood and the chemicals being used. If the baffle is not set in the proper location then you run the risk of disrupting airflow patterns and sending hazardous fumes back into the lab. This is something your really want to avoid.

“Setting the top baffle to a half-inch open will restrict the top opening of the hood and ensure a good sweep across the counter top,” explained COO Mel LeVan. “We use a calibrated anemometer to guarantee our hoods are operating at between 150-100 feet per minute with the sash opened to the industry standard of 18″.

Still it is never in the best interest for a manufacturer to certify their fume hoods. That is why Genie recommends Certified Environmental Particulate Air, Inc. (CEPA) of Ontario, CA to test that all its lab fume hoods are working correctly.
