Flammable Steel Cabinets

This entry was posted on Monday, October 10th, 2011.

Another important pieced of the Genie Scientific steel casework family is the flammable cabinet. Flammable steel cabinets are made to store flammable liquids and solvents. Specifically designed to contain flammables in the event of a fire, they are the only acceptable places to store solvents and flammables in the laboratory.

All Genie flammable cabinets have self-closing double doors, a three point latching system, spill pan and are labeled with “Flammable-Keep Fire Away.” They are an essential piece to labs where flammable liquids and solvents are being used. Genie mainly installs flammable cabinets below laboratory fume hoods, allowing easy access to them for the fume hood operator.

Genie flammables also have ventilation ports that can be connected to laboratory fume hoods to vent fumes that can build up inside the cabinet. However, the NFPA 30 Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code discourages the venting of flammable storage cabinets. The purpose of the cabinet is to protect the contents of the cabinet from a fire in the lab. It is difficult to vent a cabinet without compromising its fire protection.

Genie Scientific flammable cabinets meet National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) standards. Still, Genie recommends referencing your local building codes when selecting a flammable steel cabinet to ensure compliance with regional regulation.
